How to Check If Clients Are Sticking To Your Fitness Plan [Free Template]

One of the biggest challenges that personal trainers deal with is client accountability. And this challenge gets aggravated when training clients online or remotely.

Once a client reaches a temporary plateau, they may begin to procrastinate. There could be several reasons as to why clients stop complying with their assigned fitness plans, some of which can be:

  • Lost of motivation to continue
  • Inability to see results of their hard work
  • Alternately, they stop complying because they have reached their short-term fitness goal
  • The workouts are too hard or too easy
  • They don't have enough time, money, or other resources to commit to a fitness routine
  • They are not able to understand how to perform certain exercises
  • They may be struggling with an injury or other health issue that is preventing them from exercising safely
  • They are bored with the same routine, etc.

As a personal trainer and fitness coach, you want your client to follow the assigned fitness regime and schedule religiously. And for the same, you try to solve any issue they face. But how will you get to know the problem or the reason for their lack of accountability? How would you know if it is time to push them more and motivate them to continue working harder towards their fitness goal?

This is where progress tracking comes into the picture.

It's critical to keep track of a client's training and nutrition compliance throughout their fitness journey. As a trainer, you will be better able to spot problem areas and make changes to the client's exercise regimen if you have access to this information.

Compliance is assessed based on a client's progress through various modules over a set period of time. Based on the compliance trends are plotted on a graph to visualize.

How to See Trends & Compliance on the FitBudd Trainer Portal?

FitBudd makes clients' progress and compliance tracking very simple. You can see the metrics quantitatively, qualitatively, and graphically for every client. Here’s how you can check a client’s metrics:

  1. Once you login to your Trainer Portal, select an active client from the 'Clients' section.
  2. Select the Trends tab from the third panel.
  3. Now you can see the weekly and monthly trends for that particular client.
  4. To see how engaged the client is in their fitness journey, you can quickly review the metrics presented in this section.

Different Trends View

The Trends are available in the following views:

  1. Weekly - 7 days view for short-term compliance check (1st Week will start from the plan’s start date).
  2. Monthly - Calendar Month for a more bird-eye view.

Based on your preference and requirement, you can switch between these views.

What All Can Be Seen Under Trends?

Key metrics that are crucial to track a client’s performance and progress are auto-calculated by the FitBudd meter.

Different modules have different sets of metrics. In the Trends tab, you will be able to see the following modules:

1. Workout

By assessing your client’s performance in the assigned workouts, you can determine if the schedule is working for them, if they are following the exercises properly, etc. In the workout module, you can see the compliance and trends for the following metrics:

Completed Workouts - The completed workouts will give you a picture of how engaged the client is based on the workout you assigned and the ones completed by the client.

Duration of the Completed Workouts - Another way of measuring success in the workout module is to see the duration of the completed workout. You can check the duration logged by the client for the exercises they performed. It will give you an idea if the client is headed in the right direction.

Calories burned - The workouts performed can be intense, and the calories burned will differ accordingly. Use this metric to update the upcoming week’s schedule for the client.

2. Nutrition

Many clients struggle more with meal plans and their diet. Here's how you can monitor a client's nutrition intake and pay a closer look at the client’s eating habits.

In the Nutrition module, you can see the daily average of the meals logged by the client in a given time frame in terms of the following metrics:

Calories - Calories consumed and calories burned are two important metrics in most fitness programs. It’s always a good idea to keep a tab on the calories consumed by the client.

Proteins - Protein is an important part of a healthy diet and is used to build and repair muscles. You can track your clients protein intake through this metric.

Fats - You can also monitor the intake of fats by a client and if it aligns with the set goal or if changes are required.

Carbs - Again, you can track a client’s carbs, which is again a key metric when tracking nutrition. You can also look at all these metrics graphically to analyze progress over a longer period.

3. Water

Several people find it hard to consume the required amount of water. This is why water tracking apps are quite popular.

FitBudd not only eliminates the need for an additional water tracking app, but it also makes water consumption for clients fun because of the interactive interface in the app and gives trainers a peek into their clients' daily water levels.

The compliance tracking in this module is auto-calculated so you can see your clients' water consumption. You can check the daily average of the water intake against the assigned goal, and if it’s not looking as desired, you can push your client to consume more water.

4. Activities

Apart from the assigned workouts, it is important to have an active lifestyle for optimal health and fitness.

The activities module tracks a client’s daily activity, such as steps, energy, etc., through their wearable device. This means a client simply needs to connect your fitness app with their wearables that support FitBit and Google Fit/Apple Health.

There are a few metrics by which you can check if a client is sedentary and needs to be motivated or has an active lifestyle as expected.

Following are the metrics you can use to measure the activities compliance:

Steps - Daily average of the steps count
Energy - Daily average of the calories burned
Distance - Daily average of the distance walked
Flights - Daily average of the flights/stairs climbed

If you have assigned a goal to a client, their compliance will be calculated against that goal. Otherwise, it will be the absolute daily average.

The Qualitative Way To Measure Compliance In One Glance

Low

This indicates that things aren't looking well, and you should explore further to determine what caused the poor compliance.

Determine the source of the issue. If the client is having difficulty with the workout, consider assigning a less challenging routine. If the client's nutrition compliance is low, try planning meals that are closer to their current habits in terms of calories and macros. Make sure they understand the necessity of staying on track, whether it's with their water intake, activities, or any other aspect affecting their fitness.

Bonus Tip: Schedule a one-to-one video call with the client to understand problem areas. Keep motivating them regularly via interactive chat messages such as voice notes or inspirational videos.

Average

Things aren't great, but they're not terrible either. This is the neutral zone.

The client requires additional encouragement to continue in the correct direction. Contact your client and inquire what is preventing them from logging more time.

Bonus Tip: Praise and encourage them on their efforts. Give a shout-out to them on social media. Take their feedback and help them go the extra mile.

High

Everything is going GREAT!

The client is strictly following the prescribed fitness program. Maybe it’s time to raise the bar and challenge them slightly more. Don’t forget to appreciate their efforts.

Compliance Goals

Finally, if you or your client set a goal, it will appear under Trends as well.

The goals are also plotted in the graph so that you can get a sense of how far a client has come and how much effort is needed to achieve your objectives.

You should be able to see a dashed line representing the goal set for a particular module. If the goal is not set, it will not show on the graph.

Final Words

Keeping clients accountable is the key to helping them achieve their fitness goals. As their personal trainer and fitness coach you should motivate, guide, and push them towards their fitness goals.

And with FitBudd, training, managing, and communicating with clients becomes as seamless as possible. Try for yourself.
